1. Our Shamans Speak English AND Spanish! Very Rare!

It is very rare to come to an ayahuasca retreat center and you can talk directly to the ayahuasca shamans and san pedro shamans in your own language (if you speak English or Spanish). Nothing is lost in translation, which is laborious and often amateur and incorrect. Our shamans have not only studied the ancient shamanic traditions in the jungles with their people, but they have also gotten an education in college and know our western culture and our world. One of our shamans is a psychologist, one is a marine biologist, and they all know our songs and movies from our culture! They bridge both the ancient world and the modern world, and understand our issues and processes like no other shamans can. We searched high and low for the most intelligent and skilled shamans possible. While they offer authentic traditional ceremonies, they also understand our world in a profound and intelligent way.

2. Shamans Stay Until End of Ceremony and Available Outside Ceremonies

At almost any ayahuasca retreat center the ayahuasca shamans and san pedro shamans are unavailable to talk to, and you’re not supposed to “bother” them. As we said, most do not speak English so you couldn’t talk to them even if you could sit with them oustide the ayahuasca ceremonies. Sometimes ayahuasca shamans at other ayahuasca retreat centers do not even stay until the end of the ayahausca ceremony. They simply pass out the ayahuasca medicine or san pedro medicine, sing for a little while, and then leave while you are still in your process with the ayahausca or san pedro. Our ayahuasca shamans and san pedro shamans see you through the whole process and they are also available to talk to outside of the ayahuasca and san pedro ceremonies. We believe that the process isn’t over just because the ayahuasca ceremony or the san pedro ceremony has ended.

Not even the directors of the center are paid more than $340 per month! Most people on staff are here in trade for housing and are not gaining financially from these sacred traditions. We use our proceeds to assist the Ecuadorian community around us, like fixing their school, water systems, improving their roads, giving micro loans for them to start businesses, giving jobs to the locals, and much more. If you want your money to make a difference in South American lives, instead of going into someone’s pocket and making them rich, Gaia Sagrada is a wise karmic choice.

5. Shamans in Ecuador are Certified, Must Prove Training, Peru Uncertified

Ecuador Ayahuasca shamans and San Pedro shamans cannot offer ayahausca retreats or san pedro ceremonies in Ecuador without certification and approval by the proper agencies and the government in Ecuador. This is what makes Ecuador ayahuasca retreats safer than Peru ayahuasca retreats. This is the only country in South America that requires ayahuasca shamans and san pedro shamans prove they have done the proper shamanic training and that they have the abilities, skills and integrity necessary to practice their trade offering ayahuasca retreats and san pedro retreats. In some other countries in South America, particularly in Peru ayahuasca retreats, anyone can call themselves an ayahuasca shaman and open up shop, whether they know what they are doing or not. That is why Peru ayahuasca retreats are not as safe as Ecaudor ayahausca retreats.

We ONLY work with certified and qualified Ecuadorian ayahausaca shamans and san pedro shamans. We require our ayahuasca shamans and san pedro shamans to have the proper certifications, credentials and education, which takes years and years to attain. Our ayahausca shamans and san pedro shamans are truly committed to their trade and have done what is necessary to truly be called a shaman and do this work. If you want to work with good shamans, Gaia Sagrada is your place!

If you look into any center in Ecuador, make sure the ayahuasca shamans and san pedro shamans are certified by the shamanic organizations and registered with the government. Peru is specifically one of the places where Peruvian shamans at Peru ayahuasca retreats are not qualified to practice shamanism do so, so make sure you only work with an organization who has qualified ayahuasca shamans, even in Ecuador.

6. Ayahuasca & San Pedro is SAFE, Traditional and PURE!

The problems that arise in some situations where someone has died or been harmed at an ayahuasca retreat center is because untrained shamans mix in other things that should not be in the ayahuasca medicine or san pedro medicine in order to make it more intense or last longer. This is not good. The hundreds of different substances that are sometimes mixed into the medicines are dangerous, a mystery, and they do not tell you they are mixing other substances into the ayahuasca or san pedro.

Datura (Toe), for instance, is often mixed into non-traditional medicines and literally can kill people, it is very toxic, and some people are even allergic to it. Datura causes nightmaric and intense experiences. Nicotine mixed into the ayahuasca medicine can be a detriment as well, especially if someone cannot handle high doses of nicotine. These are just a couple of different examples of what can go wrong when other things are mixed into the ayhuasca medicine or san pedro medicine that should not be there. Often, ayahuasca medicine is blamed, but it is actually what has been mixed into the ayahuasca medicine that shouldn’t be there that is the culprit when something goes wrong.

You are getting the true and pure experience of the ayahuasca medicine and san pedro medicine as they were meant to be taken, no funny business! We use stainless steel instead of aluminum pots to cook our medicines, as aluminum is very toxic for your body. Most centers use aluminum cookware.

12. Ease of Access, Airport Close, Only Passport, Hospital Close Too!

Ease of access for travelers, no vaccines or shots required, Cuenca airport only 45 minutes away. Not having to hike or take boats into unknown places is a benefit, arrive by car! While it is romantic to go deep into a wilderness area, if there is ever an emergency, it could be a life and death situation if you are unable to get to civilization in time. We have a driver on site at all times, and if anything ever happened, the hospital is only a half hour away by car.
